Special course requirements

There are a number of special courses for old students in this tradition of Vipassana meditation practice. These courses have certain requirements which an old student must meet in order to qualify for admission. The basic qualification requirements are as follows:

One-Day or Three-Day Old Student Course

  • Completion of at least one 10 day course with Goenkaji or one of his assistant teachers.

Satipatthana Sutta Course

  • Completion of at least three 10-day courses with Goenkaji or one of his assistant teachers
  • Practicing this technique for at least one year
  • Have not practiced any other techniques since your last course with Goenkaji or one of his assistant teachers
  • Trying to maintain daily practice
  • Trying to maintain five precepts in daily life and strictly keeping the third precept (abstaining from sexual misconduct) and the fifth precept (abstaining from intoxicants) from time of applying for course

20-Day Course

  • Must be a serious old student who is committed to this technique
  • Completion of at least five 10-day courses with S.N.Goenka or one of his assistant teachers
  • Completion of at least one Satipatthana Sutta Course
  • Served at least one 10-Day Course
  • Maintenance of daily practice for at least two years (this means sitting one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening)
  • Maintenance of five precepts in daily life for at least one year
  • A gap of at least six months since the student last sat a long course
  • Ten day interval between this course and any other course

Special 10 Day Course for Old Students

Same as 20-Day Course except for the 6 months gap since last course.

30-Day Course

  • Must be a serious old student who is committed to this technique
  • Completion of at least SIX 10-day courses with S.N.Goenka or one of his assistant teachers
  • Completion of at least one Satipatthana Sutta Course
  • Completion of at least one 20 Day Course.
  • Served at least one 10-Day Course
  • Maintenance of daily practice for at least two years (this means sitting one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening)
  • Maintenance of five precepts in daily life for at least one year
  • A gap of at least six months since the student last sat a long course
  • Ten day interval between this course and any other course

45-Day Course

  • Must be a serious old student who is committed to this technique
  • Completion of at least seven 10 day courses with S.N.Goenka or one of his assistant teachers (one since a 30-Day Course).
  • Practicing this technique for at least 3 years
  • Completion of at least two 30 Day Courses
  • Maintenance of daily practice for at least two years (this means sitting one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening)
  • Maintenance of five precepts in daily life for at least one year
  • A gap of at least six months since the student last sat a long course
  • 10-day interval between this course and any other course
  • For first 45-Day Course: At least one 10-Day Course completed after a 30 day course
  • Admission limited to ATs or persons involved in Dhamma Service

60-Day Course

  • Must be a serious old student who is committed to this technique
  • Practicing this technique for at least 5 years
  • Completion of at least two 45-Day Courses
  • Maintenance of daily practice for at least two years (this means sitting one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening)
  • Maintenance of five precepts in daily life for at least one year
  • Must be an assistant teacher involved in active Dhamma service
  • A gap of at least six months since the student last sat a long course
  • 10-day interval between this course and any other course

Teacher’s Self-Course

  • Must be a serious old student who is committed to this technique
  • Completion of at least one Satipatthana Sutta Course
  • Maintenance of daily practice for at least two years (this means sitting one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening)
  • Maintenance of five precepts in daily life to the best of one’s ability
  • Admission limited to persons making a significant contribution to the spread of Dhamma
  • Requires local Teachers’ recommendation

The above are minimum requirements and not a guarantee of admission.

Application for all long courses, and for the Teacher’s Self-Course must be made by completing a special online Long Course Application form. This form can be found by clicking ‘Apply’ on the course schedule page next to the course dates.

Application for admission to each of the 10-Day Special Course, 20-Day Course, 30-Day Course, 45-Day Course and the Teacher’s Self-Course must include a recommendation from an Assistant Teacher who knows you well and a Full Teacher from the student’s local area.

Application for the Satipatthana Sutta courses and for 3-Day Old Students courses, if held in Ontario, may be made using the standard Ontario online application form, otherwise application must be made through the Centre or Regional Location where the course is to be held.
